The Knoll Barcelona armchair is one of the design icons of the 20th century. Mies van der Rohe designed the armchair for the German pavilion at the 1929 World's Fair in Barcelona. That is why the armchair is also known as the Barcelona Chair. As an aspiring designer, van der Rohe was commissioned to design the German pavilion and interior design. This is certainly one of the reasons why the Knoll Barcelona Chair became one of the most famous designs of the 20th century.

The Knoll Barcelona armchair is the ultimate symbiosis of modern design and exceptional craftsmanship. The armchair convinces with several impressive material and processing details. The frame is made of high-gloss, chrome-plated flat spring steel, which is still hand-polished to a mirror finish today. The armchair has 17 dyed butt leather straps. The butt leather straps made from the finest cowhide are fixed with aluminum rivets. The upholstery of the Barcelona armchair consists of 40 leather rectangles that are cut and sewn by hand. The upholstery filling consists of fire-retardant foam in different densities. To guarantee the authenticity of the Barcelona Chair, each piece of Knoll furniture has the signature of the designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and the emblem of the manufacturer Knoll International on the underside of the upholstery.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was director of the Bauhaus from 1930 to 1933. With Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, an outstanding personality of the German avant-garde came director at the Bauhaus.
